ビタミンC(アスコルビン酸)

ビタミンE(α-トコフェロール)

ビタミンK(フィロキノン、メナキノン)

Panax ginseng)

Vitamins

Vitamin A

Scientifically Proven EffectsVitamin A is essential for vision and immune function, and deficiency can lead to night blindness and corneal dryness.Clinical trials on vitamin A supplementation in children from developing countries have shown a reduction in overall mortality and incidence of diarrhea and measles【1】.For example, administering high-dose vitamin A to children with deficiency reduced mortality risk by approximately 12–24%【1】.This clearly supports vitamin A supplementation as an effective intervention for preventing and treating deficiency, particularly in improving child survival rates.Effective Conditions and Dosages

  • Recommended daily intake: 900 µg RAE (Retinol Activity Equivalent) for adult men and 700 µg RAE for women【2】.
  • For deficiency treatment, a high-dose supplementation of 200,000 IU (~60 mg) every six months is recommended for children.
  • High-dose supplementation is also beneficial for reducing complications in measles-infected children【1】.For individuals consuming sufficient amounts through their diet, additional supplementation has limited added benefits.Side Effects and RisksAs a fat-soluble vitamin, excessive vitamin A intake can be harmful.
  • Chronic overconsumption may cause headaches, liver damage, increased osteoporosis risk, and skin peeling.
  • High-dose intake during early pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects.
  • Studies in smokers have linked excessive vitamin A to an increased risk of lung cancer and overall mortality【2】.Both deficiency and excess pose risks, making proper intake crucial.

Vitamin B Complex (B1, B2, B6, B12, Folate, Pantothenic Acid, Biotin, Niacin)

Scientifically Proven Effects

B vitamins are essential for energy metabolism and nerve function. Deficiencies cause various symptoms:

  • Beriberi (B1 deficiency)【3】【26】
  • Angular cheilitis (B2 deficiency)
  • Anemia (Folate & B12 deficiency)
  • Neuropathy (B6 & B12 deficiency)Folate is strongly evidenced to prevent neural tube defects during early pregnancy.B6 has been found to reduce nausea and vomiting (morning sickness).High-dose niacin (B3) was previously used for treating dyslipidemia, but due to side effects such as flushing and liver toxicity, its modern use is limited. In healthy individuals with sufficient intake, consuming large amounts of B vitamins does not provide additional energy or performance enhancement.

Effective Conditions and Dosages

Each B vitamin has different recommended daily intakes:

  • B1 (Thiamine): 1.0–1.2 mg/day
  • B2 (Riboflavin): 1.0–1.3 mg/day
  • B6 (Pyridoxine): 1.3 mg/day
  • B12 (Cobalamin): 2.4 µg/day
  • Folate: 400 µg/day【4】【5】Higher doses may be used in deficiency treatments, such as:
  • B1 supplementation for alcohol dependence and beriberi
  • B12 injections for pernicious anemia

Side Effects and Risks

Since B vitamins are water-soluble, they are generally safe, but excessive doses can cause:

  • High-dose niacin (B3): Flushing and liver damage.
  • B6 (exceeding hundreds of mg/day): Peripheral neuropathy.
  • Excess folate: Masks B12 deficiency, delaying diagnosis【6】.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Scientifically Proven Effects

Vitamin C prevents and treats scurvy. It plays a role in collagen synthesis, immune function, and antioxidant activity. In physically stressed individuals (e.g., marathon runners), vitamin C supplementation reduced the incidence of colds by about 50%.Studies suggest consistent intake of 1g or more per day can shorten cold duration by approximately 8%【21】【22】【23】.However, there is no clear evidence supporting high-dose vitamin C for cancer or cardiovascular disease prevention.

Effective Conditions and Dosages

  • Scurvy prevention: 10 mg/day.
  • General health maintenance: 75–90 mg/day (recommended intake)【4】【7】.
  • Cold prevention/reduction: 1–2 g/day, particularly effective for athletes and individuals under high physical stress【22】.

Side Effects and Risks

  • Excess vitamin C is excreted in urine, but doses above 2g/day may cause:
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Increased risk of kidney stones【7】【8】.

Energy Components

Zinc (Zn)

Scientifically Proven EffectsZinc is essential for enzymatic reactions, immune function, skin health, and reproductive function.Deficiency can cause taste disorders, immune suppression, and reproductive issues【19】.Zinc supplementation has been shown to:

  • Reduce diarrhea duration
  • Improve cold symptoms【6】【20】
  • Slow age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (80 mg/day in the AREDS study)Effective Conditions and Dosages
  • Recommended intake: 11 mg/day for men, 8 mg/day for women【6】.
  • Cold treatment: 75 mg or more per day in lozenge form.
  • AMD prevention: 80 mg/day (AREDS study).Side Effects and RisksExcess zinc can cause:
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Copper deficiency anemia【6】
  • Upper safe limit: 40 mg/dayThis document serves as a comprehensive guide for business athletes, providing scientific insights into vitamins and energy components to optimize performance and health.

Maca (Peruvian Ginseng)

Scientifically Proven Effects

Maca, a plant native to the Andes region, has been traditionally used for stamina, energy enhancement, and sexual health.Several small-scale clinical trials have reported that consuming 1.5–3g of maca powder per day may help improve libido and mild erectile dysfunction. However, large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are still limited, and more research is needed to confirm these benefits.

Effective Conditions and Dosages

  • Most studies use 1.5–3g/day of maca powder or extract for 8–12 weeks.
  • Some studies have found no significant difference between 1.5g and 3g doses, suggesting that lower doses may be sufficient.
  • As a food-based supplement, its effects accumulate over time rather than providing immediate benefits.

Side Effects and Risks

Maca is generally considered safe, even at doses of 3g/day.

  • Some individuals report mild digestive discomfort, insomnia, or restlessness.
  • Potential hormonal effects have been suggested, so those with thyroid conditions or hormone-sensitive diseases should consult a professional before use.

Panax Ginseng (Korean Ginseng)

Scientifically Proven Effects

Panax ginseng has long been used as a tonic for energy, cognitive function, and immune health.Small-scale RCTs and meta-analyses suggest that Panax ginseng supplementation may:

  • Reduce chronic fatigue
  • Enhance immune function and lower the risk of colds
  • Improve cognitive function and memory
  • Improve mild erectile dysfunction (ED)However, many studies are small, and more robust research is needed.

Effective Conditions and Dosages

  • 1–3g/day of dried root powder or 200–400mg/day of extract is commonly used.
  • Studies for erectile dysfunction (ED) improvement used Korean red ginseng (2.7g/day for 8 weeks).
  • Cold prevention trials used 400mg extract daily for 4 months.
  • Some traditional guidelines recommend cycling use (e.g., taking for 2–3 months, then taking a break), but there is no strong scientific evidence supporting this.

Side Effects and Risks

Panax ginseng is generally well-tolerated, but excessive intake may cause:

  • Nervousness, insomnia, headaches, palpitations, or digestive discomfort.
  • Fluctuations in blood pressure and blood sugar levels, making it risky for those on antihypertensives or diabetes medications.
  • Increased bleeding risk when taken with anticoagulants like warfarin.Avoid excessive intake or long-term high-dose use.

L-Arginine

Scientifically Proven Effects

L-arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), which helps dilate blood vessels and improve circulation.Clinical trials suggest that L-arginine supplementation may:

  • Improve mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Support peripheral artery disease (PAD) treatmentHowever, large-scale trials have not conclusively proven that L-arginine significantly reduces cardiovascular disease risk. One trial even found that L-arginine supplementation after a heart attack increased mortality, indicating potential risks.

Effective Conditions and Dosages

  • For ED: 3–5g/day.
  • For blood pressure or PAD: Up to 9g/day, taken for 4–24 weeks.
  • Common supplementation: 500–1000mg tablets taken 2–6g per day in divided doses.
  • Effects may take weeks to develop, but some use it pre-workout for short-term benefits.

Side Effects and Risks

High doses may cause:

  • Gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating)
  • Excessive blood pressure reduction, leading to dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Worsening of herpes virus outbreaks (cold sores, shingles, etc.)
  • Increased uric acid levels (gout risk)L-arginine may interact with:
  • Blood thinners, blood pressure medications, and PDE5 inhibitors (e.g., Viagra, Cialis). Those with cardiovascular disease should consult a doctor before use.

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia, Longjack)

Scientifically Proven Effects

Tongkat Ali is an herbal remedy from Southeast Asia, traditionally used for energy, stress reduction, and testosterone enhancement.Clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that:

  • 200–400mg of Tongkat Ali extract per day can increase testosterone levels in men.
  • Improves sperm count and motility in men with infertility.
  • Reduces cortisol levels (stress hormone), potentially benefiting athletes and professionals under stress. However, the number of well-controlled studies is still limited.

Effective Conditions and Dosages

  • Typical dose: 200–400mg/day of standardized extract for 1–6 months.
  • 200mg/day has been shown to normalize testosterone levels in men with low testosterone.
  • 400mg/day has been linked to muscle strength improvements.
  • Effects may take 4+ weeks to become noticeable.

Side Effects and Risks

  • Short-term use appears safe, but high doses (over 2000mg/kg in animal studies) have shown DNA damage potential.
  • Mild side effects include insomnia, nervousness, and headaches.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions (e.g., prostate cancer, breast cancer) require caution.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid use.

Oyster Extract

Scientifically Proven Effects

Oyster extract is a natural source of zinc, taurine, and amino acids, commonly associated with energy, fertility, and recovery benefits. While large-scale trials on oyster extract itself are limited, research suggests:

  • Zinc and taurine from oysters may improve immune function and recovery.
  • A small trial in postmenopausal women found improved knee muscle strength after 12 weeks of fermented oyster extract.

Effective Conditions and Dosages

  • Typical supplementation is 500–1000mg/day (equivalent to consuming several oysters).
  • Studies used 1000mg/day for 12 weeks to measure effects.
  • Many products combine oyster extract with zinc for additional benefits.

Side Effects and Risks

  • Oyster allergies make this product unsuitable for some individuals.
  • Oysters can accumulate heavy metals, so ensure product quality and purity.
  • Excessive zinc intake from high doses can lead to copper deficiency.

Conclusion

This document provides a comprehensive scientific summary of vitamins and energy components for business athletes. For individuals seeking optimal health and performance, proper nutrition, exercise, and sleep are crucial. Each vitamin and supplement has specific benefits, conditions, and risks, so appropriate intake is essential. Before using high doses or long-term supplementation, consult a medical professional—especially for individuals with underlying health conditions or those taking medications.By making informed decisions, business athletes can enhance both their physical and cognitive performance effectively.
